can i use a 4gb and a 8gb ram together???

guys i have a 4gb ddr3 ram @1333 mhz can i use a 8gb ddr3 ram @1333 mhz together...and will it give a potential of a 12gb ram???
do these two rams have to be of the same brand???

p.s my motherboard supports upto 16gb of ddr3 @1333 mhz

I have Corsair vengerange 8+4GB + 2+2 GB gskll.
All 1600MHz 9. 9 . 9 . 9. 24 Cl timings.
But I have X-79Mobo. so ? But they can work but if you have 2 channel memory controller Im not sure that it works with two channels. So you may lose bit performance by using 8+4GB
Then better is two same size memory sticks.
4+4 or 8+8 X-58 needs 3 sticks to work with best performance. .
