Has anybody got any ideas?

Maybe just needs a drive letter assigning to it (Windows sometimes fails to assign a letter automatically to external drives).
Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

In the bottom-right section, find the ribbon which relates to that drive. Right-click it and choose "Change Drive Letter & Paths". Click "Add". Accept the default letter, click 'OK.
