can I connect my hard drive to the internet by wireless when my hub is downstairs

To be pedantic, the hard drive is only one part of the computer but yes, if the computer also has a wireless adapter. If it isn't built-in, you can buy PCI or PCIe cards to install yourself or, more simply, a USB wi-fi dongle. So long as there isn't a rolled steel joist between the floors, connection shouldn't be difficult.

Yep - your local Maplins - £15 - simples :D 

The front USB port is better than the rear ones. That way the dongle doesn't have to fight for the signal through the metal case.
