I recently attempted to upgrade from 4gb of ram to 8. I've found that my computer will freeze randomly and display all sorts of lines of different colors. But sometimes its just what looks like little lines of code running up and down my screen. I've now put the old ram back in and I haven't had a problem yet. I already took the other sticks back to the store and replaced them and the new ones are still giving me that problem. Is there a possibility that I've just done something wrong or is my laptop inherently going to hate new ram?

What are the "Timing" of both new and old RAM ? And what is the exact make/model of RAM's (old and new) ?

You can use this program to find the RAM specification : http://www.filehippo.com/download_speccy/

And you could use this site to find the perfect matching RAM for your system : http://www.crucial.com/

I used the crucial thing before I bought them. The old ones and these are both 1333 MHz, but I don't have the timings. I know the new are PNY and I'm starting to just not trust the brand. I've put the old ram back in now and everything is running fine.

Yes PNY is not a trusted brand. Its better not to mix RAM brands, sometime it gives trouble. So if you can figure out the specs of old RAM, then it will be better to go with the same brand for new one's. Good luck.
