It depends on personal choice. If you want Physx effects and play more Nvidia supported games from their The Way It's Meant To Be Played scheme or want to use the upcoming Mantle and play more AMD supported games from Gaming Evolved scheme.
Personally I have gone off Nvidia cards since I had a lot of Windows Vista BSOD driver issues with my Nvidia 8800 and i've not had any issues since I switched to AMD.
Some people will tell you they have not had any issues with Nvidia but have had issues with AMD cards.
So it's really your decision
If you play Battlefield 4 a lot it might be ab easy decision

i play alot of fps and rpg like tourch light2 and cod bf4 dayz arma3 skyrim games like that so im torn between them iv always have had nvidia and with no problems but the 700 sieres is so expensive for the higher end gpus and i see when the r9 290 is oced it will beat the 290x and for 399 that is Hmm, So Amd r9 290 it is. Unless you have gtx 780ti, the gtx 700 series is clearly not as good as r9 290/290x. So Get the r9 290 as it is a better a better bang for the buck.

should i wait till other companies like msi or asus come out with a better coolerYes, Waiting is one of the best things you could do right now. Besides, I don't think it will be long when r9 290 will come out with a better cooler and it is also more likely to be even cheaper. So companies like asus, gigabyte, msi, sapphire are one of those who are really worth the wait. So I think you should wait at least some more time.

I have 6870 - I did have some errors in the beginning, but it's just about the drivers. and in a 2 years haven't had any problems
oh man - I am in the same spot, I almost bought EVGA GTX780 on Saturday £410. But now I am really considering R9 290 £310 to £350(asus)
but in the same time with Nvidia you get 3 games for free... I am a huge fan of Assassins Creed. not so much of Batman, but anyway...
