Hi guys, I recently got the Gigabyte 780 Windforce GHz edition, but It won't fit inside my Antec 300 case, when I try to slot it into any of the PCI-E slots, the diagonal corner on the edge of the card hits the lower side of the drive bay enclosure by 2mm card width, so it goes to 1CM from position vertically, but its impossible to fully slot in.

So what I want to do is cut away a strip of metal which is on the edge of the fan enclosure, just above the diagonal corner of the card, to allow the drive bay edge to slot into the hole on the graphics card. If this doesn't work I will just remove the entire corner of the fan shroud.

To that end I have tried to remove the metal fan shroud / enclosure so I can cut it safely, but I have failed, it is still attached to the heatsink by 1 screw which is located on the heatsink, but the DVI ports block access to that screw, making it impossible to remove it with a normal screwdriver unless the heatsink is removed.

So I then tried to remove the heatsink, I took out every single screw that I could find, including the ones on the backplate surrounding the GPU, This did nothing as far as I can tell, and I can see that the metal backplate is secured by screws from the front side that are underneath the heatsink, so I can't remove the backplate either.

I then found some bolts that pass through the main heatsink, so I unscrewed one of them ( though I didn't really have the proper tools to do it ) but then I found that this bolt could not be fully removed and it probably doesn't hold the heatsink in place anyway.

So I looked on the internet but I couldn't really find a guide for it, people just said the TIM is what is holding it in place, then I realized that I might not actually remove the heatsink because if I do it might require replacing the TIM, can I just put it back in place 1 min later or is the distribution no good once its been removed ? I'm more concerned about the efficiency of the card being affected rather than if it breaks outright. Also I could probably break off the fan shroud at this point but I would rather learn to do it the proper way.

I am not a total noob, but I have no experience taking apart graphics cards, so I would like some advice please.

Hmmmm cut the $700 graphics card and possibly break something while voiding the warranty or cut the $50 case....choices choices. ;)

Don't worry about it, I didn't want to cut the case because in my experience cases last longer than graphics cards and can create sharp edges, in the end I decided it was not a good idea to remove the heatsink and cut the fan enclosure with wire clippers once I realized the metal was not as strong as I thought, card works fine.
