Core 2 quad to i3

I don't like synthetic tests but: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core2-Quad-Q8300-vs-Intel-Core-i3-3220 I still don't think you'd see much of a boost.

The Q8300 is a true quad whereas the i3 is a dual core with 4 threads. I'd keep the Q8300, I don't think you'd see too much of a performance boost. What is your current motherboard and graphics card?

I'd say keep your money and get an i5 4670k or an FX 8320/8350 in future.

I would buy the Radeon HD 7870 1st then upgrade to a Core i5 later after you save up some more money. There seems to be some decent sales for Radeon HD 7000 series graphic cards. You might want to wait for Black Friday / Cyber Monday. You will get an increase in performance, but you will not get the full power of the HD 7870 until after you upgrade to the Core i5.

You would need a new motherboard anyway, I say go with the FX 6300 and Am3+ motherboard. The 6300 is a HUGE upgrade over Q8300 and a big upgrade over any i3. If your budget is that low, you can't go wrong with AMD. The FX 6300 @ $119 is better than every processor any where near it's price range.

To answer your original question, I think the i3 3220 would be superior to the old q8300 in gaming. I know for a fact that a i3 2120 is strong enough to produce 60+ fps when paired with a GTX 660ti.

If you cannot afford an i5, go with a FX 6300

if im not mistaken i3 doesnt support multi thread and has only 2 core compare to the 4 cores. It is.better to invest and compare a n i5 with a quad core rather than i3. think of it this way i3 is for note book and i5 for laptop/desktop
