So far I am on my second r9 280x, Gigabyte Wind force. (For the record Gigabyte customer service is as bad if not worse than what you've heard). In any case I bought the first one from newegg and promptly RMA as it was DOA.

New egg sent me another, whic is now producing horrible coil whine. Playing bf4 without headphones is aggravating as hell. I am using a Thermaltake TR2 600w.

My question is is should I RMA this card again to try a replacement? Or should I try an alternative like the 2gb gtx 770? Or anything else $300ish is pretty much my limit. I am planning on doing XF or SLI later on when one card becomes ineffective.

Thank you very much,

Peter

You could get an HD 7970GHz Edition as well. Exact same thing as the 280X. AMD simply rebadged it and put a different plastic shroud on it. Should be a similar price.

If you are planning on SLI later on then the 770 is the obvious choice, it has a bit more performance than the 280x and a bit less power consumption and heat.

If you choose to get an HD7970GHz, or any other AMD card, get a Sapphire (and a Vapor-X if you can help it). They make the best AMD GPU based cards.

The smart choice when dissatisfied with one product is to switch. The GTX 770 will be faster and quieter (with the same coolers, the 770 will always be quieter due to its more efficient GPU).

Gigabyte 280X Windforce OC: 45 dbA

Gigabyte GTX 770 Windforce OC: 33 dbA

The 770 will also allow you to enable those Nvidia exclusive technologies as well, like PhysX, Adaptive VSync, Shadowplay, TXAA, HBAO+, etc. SLI, as you are probably aware, is not afflicted by the frame pacing and driver level game incompatibilities the way Crossfire is. The GTX 770 also comes with three free games. Hard to go wrong by upgrading to a better video card.

So the consensus is against the 770? I'm assuming crossfire will be able to match sli in a year or so when I buy another?

Actually i'd say the concensus is *for* the GTX 770. They are definitely more power efficient, and therefor quieter since the fans can spin slower because there's less heat to remove. If you would prefer to stay with AMD for whatever reason, then a 7970GE is a safe bet...tried and tested. But the GTX 770 (or a GTX 680..exact same thing once again), will keep your electric bill down and won't bake all the other components in your case nearly as much.

Could you link to the card you are referring to? I see no free games. Also, is it worth the extra ~$40ish to get the 4gb? People say 2gb is enough for one monitor for now, but clearly it won't 'now' in 6 months.
