I've seen lots of different people saying overclocking is harmless and others say it's bad and you shouldn't do it at all. So I want to find out what's actually true, and what's not. Does overclocking shorten the lifespan of a CPU/GPU? If so, by how much? And can short lifespan when overclocking be prevented in anyway?

Solution
The answer is maybe. Simple measures like changing the clock speed and CPU multiplier have little effect as long as you keep the temperature down. Increasing CPU voltage will probably shorten CPU life, but how much is uncertain. If you don't push the voltage a lot and keep the temperature down, the loss of useful life i probably minimal. Make all increases in small increments, over voltage can decrease the CPU life to 0.
