4 slot motherboard but only 3 slots work

I have a 4 memory slot motherboard that will run duel channel, but only 3 slots work. I currently have two 2gb sticks in duel channel slots. The system is x64 and can handle up to 16gb. My question is will I get an improvement in performance if I put a 4gb stick in the 3rd working slot but loose duel channel memory use? I play online games and am starting to lower my settings to get less lag. Thank you!

Want the 2 2GB sticks in the same Channel i.e. slots 1-2 and the 4 GB in slot 3 or 4 - that way you have 4GB in each channel and if mobo supports flex mode or similar then all 8 will run in dual

Thank you! I have a MSI MS-7588 do you know if this mobo will support that? I can not seem to find a yes or no on the internet.

Not positive off hand, it might, if not, it will all run in single channel

Try running a PSU with a higher wattage first off, another aspect causing your problem could be the motherboard it's self. is the MOBO new? old ?

I fairly sure its the motherboard that is broke. Slot 1 is the issue, at one point i had my existing memory in 1 and 2 and noticed that things were slow after about a year of use. Only one stick was recognized so after some trial i found the problem. The motherboard is about 3 years old.

If I do add a third stick increasing the memory and loosing duel channel would i have an increase of performance or decrease?
