I have a Compaq cq 50. I recenty purchased new RAM (4gb), new dard disk (500gb) and WIN 8.1 x64 English 1 pk DSP OEI DVD. I have the ram and drive but cannot find good instructions of what to do next (it has been decades since I have built a system). I am a bit hesitant to use the the old drive for anything because of multiple virus problems. ... Do I need to build a boot disc before I use the oem DVD? ... What about a PE? ?.. feeling a little old, out of touch and lost :((

Solution
The Win 8.1 disk is bootable all by itself, so all you need to do is insert it into the DVD drive and boot the system from it once you have the new hard drive you purchased physically installed as well. The 8.1 install wizard should guide you through the process. If you run into any problems running the install, post back and we will see what we can do to help.

Solution
Open the dvd and insert the windows disc. Shut down the pc and install the new hdd. Boot to dvd and follow the instructions. Windows will format and install everything you need. When that's complete, download current drivers for the hardware, put on an anti-virus, update windows and you're done.

Piece of cake!

Once the OS is installed and operational, then it would be in your benefit to create a boot disc or more formally the Windows 8.1 Recovery Disk. This way if you find yourself having boot issues, you can recover.

The 8.1 install disk the OP purchased also serves this function. If you have the install disk handy, you can also use it to help recover a failing install.

The recovery disk is only required if you know that you are going to be stuffing the install disk away in a closet somewhere and maybe never see it again...

OOPS! I meant to describe the creation of the System Image Backup. Thanks for pointing out my error!
