Unity is the GUI of Ubuntu and GNOME is other GUI in other linux distributions. And for the replacement of Unity you need to do some configurations in the system settings.

Unity is the default Ubuntu GUI. Do nothing, but install UBUNTU 12+ ... login to Unity.

But, if you download Gnome then after boot, clicking a **choice-icon** will present you with GUI options of Unity and a couple variants of Gnome ... before you login.

Running U_12.04 I prefer Gnome and **hate** Unity, but after each boot the choice is available. **NB** in the login screen the stupid "choice-icon" looks like a decorative snark: it is NOT labled **choose GUI here** ... insane.
