Looking to upgrade current CPU on a budget.

Specs:

AMD Athlon II X4 631
ASUS F1A55-M LX PLUS
Corsair 600w
Crucial Ballistix 4GB
Radeon HD 6850

Hi,
Current setup is having problems running games well, I assume the CPU is bottlenecking the system. I know its not the best, as this rig was built on an extreme budget a year or so ago. Now I'm wondering what my options are for upgrading. I was thinking the AMD A-Series A8 3870K but I'm not sure how good it is? What difference it would make? And how it interacts with the current GPU?

OK sorry, well I was not planning on upgrading the motherboard. But now that you mention it I guess I could, if the performance would be that much better. Shouldn't be too expensive.

unless you upgrade the mobo you have the best cpu for an fm socket. if you upgrade get this and it will out perform ur current build. (im adding a full build for you to follow if you upgrade a piece at a time)

Thank you for your suggestion. I'm not going to be upgrading the whole PC though. It looks like I will need to upgrade both mobo and cpu though. So the A10 6800k would be the best option?

yes that is the same cpu as this but has the current best onboard gpu available. the list was just a guidline for future upgrades as you go.

I don't think I really need the best onboard GPU available though do I? As I already have Radeon HD 6850 dedicated GPU. Wouldn't I be better off jsut going for something faster all round? Maybe not an APU, a Phenom or soemthing?

the other one i linked is the same cpu as the a10 and your current gpu is compatable. $89
