Is an aftermarket cooler necessary for this system?

on an i5 3470, do I need an aftermarket cooler for gaming or can I just go with the stock cooler? my case has four 120mm fans in it by the way

There are worse things than the stock cooler. It may be ok as long as you never do anything to really stress the CPU.
But if you are doing any heavy computing (gaming, or folding, for example) you will find that the CPU will throttle itself down to reduce heat buildup, and there is a chance of thermal damage and in the long run there is a risk that you will reduce the lifespan of the CPU.

If all you can afford at the moment is the stock cooler, then run with it, you will be ok. But look into saving up for an aftermarket cooler. Tom's Hardware has lots of articles to read up on that will help you learn about them.

It wouldnt be necessary, but if you want your pc to run quieter I would recommend the Enermax ETS T40

I actually already bought an aftermarket cooler as I plan to do a lot of gaming and wanted to keep my cpu cool however I'm just having second thoughts right now because my cpu cooler is fairly large (the hyper 212 evo) and I'm afraid that it won't fit in my case

The 212 is a excellent, cost effective cooler, generally considered superior to the stock cooler. If you can fit it in your case, I recommend it.

If you are dealing with limited space, and have the option to exchange the 212, here are some low profile coolers. They tend to be a bit more expensive though.
