Very slow network speeds - WLAN bottleneck?

Hey guys, I am getting really slow speeds on my WiFi connection and I'm not sure what the problem is.

Over the past couple days, my internet speed has dropped from about 14 Mbps to 2 Mbps as measured in the Ookla speedtest. Netflix/HBO Go streaming has been having problems as a result.

Last night I had my neighbor reset the router (we are sharing a connection, he is one floor directly beneath me) and it seemed to temporarily fix the problem and speeds were back to 14 Mbps. Today, the slow speeds are back and I don't feel like knocking on his door every day to reset the stupid thing.

He says his hard-wired LAN connection is fine. I used the "LAN Speed Test" between my desktop and laptop, and it confirmed that I could only transfer a file at ~2 Mbps (288 KBps). That is dreadfully slow, even for a wireless connection.

Anybody have any ideas? Need some extra information to tell?

It is a Linksys WRT160NL with firmware version 1.00.01 B17.

If he lets you, you could log on to the router and reboot it when needed. you could also change the channel. use inSSIDer to help.

The firmware needs updating B19 is only the second update from the original and from 2009, you have to do it with a wire and with usb unplugged from it.

Gave that a shot. Managed to do it wirelessly without my neighbors permission (ninja firmware upgrade!) and it seemed to work. I'll have to wait and see if the problem comes back.
