Hey folks , I'm looking to choose between two dell laptops since I get dell products at 15% off. the laptops are the inspiron 15 7000 with a i5-4200u and nvidia gt 750m graphics and the inspiron 15 se with a 3rd gen i7 and amd 7730m graphics. I'm looking for the laptop with the best gaming performance. cheers in advance for any help. the link is for a side by side spec comparison. http://www.dell.com/uk/p/configuration-compare.aspx?returnURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dell.com%2Fuk%2Fp%2Finspiron-15r-se-7520%2Fpd.aspx%3Fc%3Duk%26cs%3Dukdhs1%26l%3Den%26s%3Ddhs%26~ck%3Dmn

I'd definitely say go for the i5, the CPU isn't that much of a necessity in gaming, hence I'd say, go for the i5 since the single threaded performance isn't that much of a difference between the i5 4200U and the i7 3632QM isn't that much of a difference, i7 and i5 differs the most in multi-threaded performance, but in this generation of gaming, most games don't rely that much on the multi-threaded performance of a CPU, unless you are going into video editing, but laptops were never meant for video editing, hence I'd say go for the i5 4200U with the gt 750M, the i5 will definitely not be a bottle neck for the gt 750M, it will definitely not be a problem if you want to game on that laptop.

On the other side of things, I will still...

First off. If you are buying a system for gaming you should not even be thinking about buying a laptop. Only reason for getting a laptop is if you plan to game on the move. Which usually not the case.

With that out the way. You need to say what games your playing. For example games like minecraft use the CPU alot more and then games like cod use the gpu alot more. In addition to that, certain games use the extra cores offered by most i7s however the majority don't make use of them.

Without knowledge on what games you are playing I would say the i5 system. But post what games you are going to play and that might change...

Hi Barney thanks for the help :) to answer your statement about laptops not being the best gaming machines, I do have a gaming desktop but I am in need of something more portable as well.

at the minute the games I'm most likely to play are a few different Moba's league of legends mostly which has quite low requirements. as well as that a few of bethesdas rpg's such as fallout new vegas or skyrim which I can imagine are slightly more challenging for a laptop. the most system intensive games I have played recently are deus ex human revolution and planetside 2 , I highly doubt either laptop would run ps2.

On the other side of things, I will still recommend you get a proper gaming desktop if you are not planning to carry the laptop around.

thanks nexezz, I replied to someone earlier saying that I already have a gaming desktop. I'm just looking for something a bit more mobile, I'm at university at the moment and I'm going back and forward from home with my desktop in one place. but yeah I think I'll go for the i5 it has a few features better than the i7 laptop anyway it has a hd screen and not that im too fussed but a touch screen as well. :)

Oh I see, sorry for that I didn't see that comment made. Glad you have made your choice! :) Hope you enjoy your new laptop, the 750M is quite powerful for a card that's in a laptop, it should be able to run battlefield 4 at 60 fps if you turn down the resolution and settings. I too have a touchscreen laptop, but I don't really use the touch screen most of the time anyways unless I'm playing some cut the rope when Im really bored.
