I'm planning on building a pretty high end system soon, but i'm still not sure if I should go with an Asus 144hz 1080p monitor for $250 or a Qnix 60hz 1440p monitor for $350. I mainly want to know how big of a step up 1440p is from 1080p.

Solution
If your main usage is gaming then go with the 144Hz ASUS. If it is professional usage (i.e. stuff like video editing) then the 1440p monitor will be better.

Well I will mostly be playing games like Arma III and Dayz. Those games require you to be able to spot hostiles at far range and I think a higher resolution might help with that. Also the Qnix can be overclocked to about 96Hz without much visual loss I believe.

Just minor darkening of colours, you wouldn't notice unless you looked for it side by side, makes very very dark greys black, for example.

1080p to 1440p isn't massive, but certainly noticeable. As to Qnix VS Asus, one and only benefit of the Asus will be less vertical tearing due to the higher refresh rate.
