My GTX 580 has just blown up and I am forced to replace it, the cannot afford another one and the only card I have around is a GTX 295 so my three questions are:

1. Can broken graphics cards be fixed? Is it worth me taking it down to the local hardware shop and seeing what they can do? The card was putting loads of green vertical lines on the screen.

2. How good is a GTX 295? Will I be able to run low/medium/high on new releases? Will I even be able to run them?

3. If the GTX 295 is bad, is it possible to run SLI with a GTS 250 and if it is what will this do? Will I have the equivalent of a stronger card?

Sorry for the noob questions, but this is the first time I have had a bit of hardware break on me so a bit lost on what to do, any help is really appreciated.

Thanks!

Depends on what is wrong. Some people have had luck with reflowing the solder joints. Some even do it by baking it in the oven but I don't recommend that.

The GTX295 will not support directx 11 features

You can only SLI with cards with the same GPU chip

The 295 is still a fairly powerful card by modern standards, check the hierarchy chart, it's still on par with a GTX 650 Ti Boost and GTX 570 which is only a small step down from the 580

It does lack directx 11 support, but high settings on new releases should definitely be achievable, provided that they don't require Dx11

The GTX 295 is a dual-GPU card based on the GTX 275. As long as you only play games that have a DX9/DX10 setting, you can play them. However, games that are DX11 only won't even load.

An example being Crysis 3, though there is a way to get around that
