Hi Everyone,

Firstly thanks to everyone for answering my questions regarding other components for my build. I just have a couple questions concerning motherboards for my rig (gaming and web browsing only)

I will be purchasing:
i5-4670k
Noctua NH-C14
EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX780 Superclocked ACX Cooler 3GB GDDR5
16 GB of RAM - I have heard height issues of the Noctua + Motherboard...

Can you please advise me on the ideal Motherboard to use?

In terms of Budget I am flexible.
I will be OC the CPU once I find out how. (Have heard its easy to OC using the Asus Hero)
I take it most motherboards have decent on-board sound and OC utilities?

+1
Ram is great, leaves room for cooler. Just get a Hero Z87 motherboard. The best bet in inexpensive overclocking.

Thanks for all your answers, with budget not being an issue.

The ASRock Z87 Extreme4
or
ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO LGA 1150 ?

is the extreme 4 a lga 1150 aswell if not you have to get the asus because your intel i5 supports it but if the extreme 4 is lga 1150 its basicly what stuff do you need more 3.0s for example. (updated) if its the extreme 4 i suggested thats lga 1150 compatible

The Z87 Extreme4 is LGA1150. Other variants can be found with different sockets.

I wouldn't bother spending more on the MB than that - beyond there, you're thoroughly in diminishing returns.

Are you getting an SSD? If not, that will make a way larger difference than the few tens of megahertz at the most a better VRM will get you.

Hi Someone Somewhere,

Just checked my vendor where I'm buying the parts from (I'm in Dubai - Middle East) and they price the Hero at an extra $190 which is nuts.

I will be using a 240 GB SSD. Why? Can you explain the VRAM more please? Is the Z87 Extreme4 the way to go?

VRM = Voltage Regulator Module. It converts the 12V from your PSU to the ~2V which is fed to the internal VRMs in your CPU. It has the biggest impact of any component on the motherboard as to how well you can OC.

For about the same price, getting an SSD would have a much larger effect on performance than a slightly better motherboard.

Any of the three boards I originally mentioned are fine, and are pretty similar. Get the cheapest.
