Title should make sense.

Can I use AMD HD7770 cards in CrossFire for dedicated PhysX in the same system where I am using a GTX 780 as the gpu?

I have seen too many contradictions as to why it will work or will not work, so end up asking here.

I dont want to muddle anything up in the PC or drivers etc...

PhysX is only for nvidia GPUs, so no.

Exactly. Dedicated PhysX gpu's are only for nVidia cards.

It CAN be done but it takes some patience and involves hacking older drivers, drivers that will not support your nice new GTX780 fully and the result is certainly going to be a pain to keep running because those old drivers will not, and never will, benefit from any bugfixes for games published after their release date.
So, to all practical intents and purposes, no, you can't mix AMD/Nvidia like that anymore.
Anyway TBH the GTX780 is so powerful I doubt it'll suffer too much of a performance penalty if you used it as both renderer and for PhysX.

Yeah, you would be better off selling the 7770's and buying a cheap used gtx 660 and dedicate to physx.

I get that the GTX 780 is good; but in 3D it struggles at Ultra settings in games like Batman.

I was offered the equivalent of $10 each from a PC parts shop here in Japan.
They cost me the equivalent of $120 each a month or two ago (before I bought the NVidia 3D monitor). Its quite a hit ($220).

The GTX 660 is still around $180 here on Amazon.jp; so I will keep an eye out for a used 660 from a trustworthy source.

I guess I would rather not sell the HD7770`s (as they are great in SLi if the worst should happen to the GTX), and wait for the GTX 780 to drop in price a bit more in the middle of next year, and go SLi....

Games like `Batman: Arkham City` (GOTY) drop to about 10fps (TEN FRAMES PER SEC :(  ) Sometimes in the Benchmark software in 3D (averages 38fps).

I would like to get rid of the slumps, even if I have to limit the highs.

P.S.

Just in case a decent GTX660 appears, is it easy to dedicate it to PhysX?
It appears in NVidia controls.
