Hi Everyone,

Slightly strange request but I need some help in finding a monitor for by new gaming rig I will be building next month.

I am an "eye candy" gaming guy, I like games like Oblivion / Skyrim which have epic landscapes, I do however play a lot of FPS like BF3, etc. (BF4 when it gets fixed)

For monitors I do care about what it looks like. I have SAMSUNG LED TV at home, with Silver & transparent trim and I like the look. So I guess I am after something that can do a great job with games and still look good in either White or Silver trim...?

Ive read about IPS and TN monitors but to be honest its a bit confusing. I think I need to have something at least 120Hz refresh rate....less than 5 m/s delay.

I will be installing an EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX780 Superclocked ACX Cooler 3GB Card and i5 4670k chip (OC)
Budget wise I am flexible.

In my research I have come up with following, but his is only scratching the surface:
Asus LED VG248QE
Samsung 700 SERIES S23A700D
Asus MX239H Full HD LED-backlit

Any things i need to look out for in a gaming monitor? I have a slight bias towards Samsung and ASUS - but can be easily converted....Any tips or suggestions are appreciated.

Many thanks

Hey TommyTanker!
When looking for a gaming monitor you need to keep in mind 3 things; Response time, Refresh Rate, and Quality. Refresh rate is how fast the screen refreshes the pixels and this is usually associated with how smooth the image is. Response time is how long it takes for the monitor to change the image or show the image from your computer. Your video card will be able to handle almost any monitor so you don't need to limit yourself. The 3 monitors you picked are all very good, however I would suggest the Asus VG24 because of the higher refresh rate and lower response time. Both are 3D ready but the Asus would provide a smoother image in 3D due to the extra refresh rate. The Samsung however is cheaper and almost provides the same thing. The Asus VG248QE however is black compared to the Samsung's silver/grey. Finally, don't worry about being bias towards those companies. I like both of those companies alot because they provide quality products however there are other companies out there so do some research and you'll be surprised what you can find.

Anyways I would suggest the Asus LED VG248QE because it is better at everything expect the price. Good luck on your build and hopefully you find the monitor that suites you.

Hi V0RTEX
Firstly thanks for your great answer, which is very helpful. I wasn't 100% sure about refresh rates and response times.

As you say, stats wise the Asus VG248QE is clearly better and its beats out the 2 in those categories alone but interestingly enough its actually cheaper on newegg.com than the Asus MX239H...which is weird considering it has better specs. Is there a reason for that?

In reading the reviews the VG248QE scores higher than the MX239H - HOWEVER the MX239H just looks so beautiful with its thin bezel, Silver colour and appearance is very stylish. This is gonna be a tough one...

On newegg they have great deals and great pricing. When I looked it up it was more expensive but anyways that is even better for you than. Remember that both monitors are great just choice which ever one you want. Its Performance vs Look.
