Hi,

Inspired by this site i have decided to build my next computer myself. Its been a while since i have bought hardware to build a PC.

So i decided to run it through here before i start spending money.

The cost of my build is about 1800 USD.

What do you think of it ? Have i missed something, or does it look solid.

CPU : Intel Core I7 4770K
Mainboard : ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO
HD System : Samsung 840 EVO SSD - 250GB
HD Storage : Seagate Desktop HDD SATA600 - 1TB
RAM : G.Skill TridentX Series8gb 2400 mhz
Case : Corsair Vengeance C70
PSU : Corsair CX750M
GFX : XFX Radeon R9 290 Core - 4GB GDDR5
DVDRW : ASUS DRW 24F1ST

Its ment to run anything the marked has to offer at ultra settings. Hopefully it can do that for some time.

It should be possible to upgrade this build at a later point aswell. Adding more RAM and maybe an extra gfx.

Comments and suggestions are greatly apriciated :)

BTW - Does anyone know the estimated release date of R9 290 none-refrence cards.

Thanks in advandce and best regards // Ole

P.S - Ultimate might be abit of an overstatement to this build. But im trying to get the best possible build for 1800 USD as possible. (1800USD is what the hardware costs in denmark - which might be more than most other countries)

Unless he plays some CPU intensive games like BF4 or Crysis. But it should be fine otherwise.

That's true. I should have said "most games" :p

Hi there. Right now since I promised.

Now if you DO have the budget and you really want to spend that money, then the I7 does makes sense, but in most cases the I7 is not much better than the I5 equivalent.

Now some changes and reasoning behind them.

Drop to a cheaper board, the Hero is overpriced and pointless. Maybe a MSI GD65/ Asrock Extreme3 / Asus PLUS / Gigabyte UD4.

That RAM speed is pointless. Look at 1866MHz RAM at the very most.

XFX cards have KNOWN overheating issues, also wait for the aftermarket cooler cards on the R9s before getting one.

750W is too much wattage and that PSU is not suggested. So look at a more reliable 550W UNLESS you want to dual GPU, in which case I would suggest you go for a RELIABLE 850W.

Pick a PSU of this list from Tier1 , 2a or 2b. NOTHING else.

What you COULD do (not that you should do it, just give it some thought):
Drop to i5
Lower RAM speed as already suggested
Think if 120 GB SSD is not enough
Get a good but not overpriced mobo as already suggested
Get the R9 280x Toxic from Sapphire (if you don`t wanna wait for R9 290 non-ref)
Get a modular silver-gold certified PSU (it will help with the cabling and airflow) - orientate for 850W just to make sure you can CrossX/SLI in the future
Get a case with really good airflow (I remember that Antec 1100 was awesome for only 2 standard fans)

Thanks for your answer.

I do have the money, but its always hard to choose when to stop spending, which is why I am considering this change.

I have chosen the ASUS board as its a ROG board which should have the best components and good OC capabilities.

Ill look into your board suggestions for sure.

I wanted a 750W PSU so i have the option at a later time to go for a dual GPU config. Ive found a Seasonic M12 750W. Thats not enough for dual GPU?

The RAM fits good into the color theme of my build, and i belive i can clock them to actually run 2400 MHZ with the ASUS board. Correct me if im wrong. There is next to no money to save buying 'slower' RAM units.

As for my Graphics, then i belive its the same R9 290 weather or not its a card from Gigabyte, Asus or even XFX since its still the refrence cards. However ill stay away from XFX if i go with the downgrade on Graphics to R9 280X or GTX 770 2GB.

But which is better? :)

My goal with this is to get the best pc for the money. I have read in another thread that people suggest to go with the I5 as its nearly the same as the I7 when gaming. Also as I mentioned, I have a hard time waiting for none-refrence R9 290 cards.

Well then you should not be looking at the R9 290, the reference design is NOT worth it.

You can toss a coin between the GTX770/R9 280x, they are EXTREMELY close.

A cheaper board will pretty much equal the OCing capabilities of the Asus since the main limiting factor will be cooling and the chip itself.

Yeah that seems to be the general concensus about the R9 290s, and there seem to be conflicting reports about the 290X from this and every other tech forum on the internet. Some are saying it's great, others are saying it needs a lot of improvement.

1. The motherboard VI Hero is worth it. It has pretty much any RAM speed compatibility and has 2 PCI Express 3.0 slots which is much better than 2.0.

Most motherboards only have 4 usb 3.0 slot but this one has 6 and 8 usb 2.0 slots.

It also has a crapton of exclusive features.

ROG GameFirst II
ROG RAMDisk
ROG CPU-Z
ROG Mem TweakIt
ROG BIOS Print
ROG SSD Secure Erase
GPU.DIMM Post
Tweakers' Paradise
Extreme Tweaker
USB BIOS Flashback
Extreme Engine Digi+ III
NexFET™ Power Block MOSFET
60A BlackWing Chokes
10K Black Metallic Capacitors
MemOK!
ASUS O.C. Profile
ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3
ASUS EZ Flash 2
ASUS Q-Shield
ASUS Q-Code
ASUS Q-LED (CPU, DRAM, VGA, Boot Device LED)
ASUS Q-Slot
ASUS Q-DIMM
ASUS Q-Connector
ASUS C.P.R.(CPU Parameter Recall)
ASUS WebStorage
AI Suite 3
Ai Charger
USB Charger+
USB 3.0 Boost
Disk Unlocker
Kaspersky® Anti-Virus
DAEMON Tools Pro Standard

2. RAM Speed is NOT pointless.

http://www.corsair.com/en/blog/bf4-loves-high-speed-memory

Soon every game will be taking advantage of high speed ram so it is better to get it now. Also high speed ram can multitask better than lower speed ram. It can also run servers and render things much faster than lower speed ram.

3. There is never too much power supply wattage. That is the one thing that gamers never replace due to it being a hassle. So getting a high voltage 80+ Gold or Platinum will be the best with upgrading and running SLI.

Yes, because a CX750m is SUCH a great powersupply and it can totally run dual GPUs just fine... Either go for a REAL dual GPU compatible PSU, or drop to not too much more than you need.

PLEASE explain to me how ANY of those features are either unique to Asus Here or even useful.

Just because ONE has RAM speed scaling, does not mean others will. Its a very case.

I have found better PSU's from your list. Im just abit confused about how much is needed for two graphic cards. Ive seen in some Threads that 750W is enough for two. Maybe because its Nvidia which uses less power. Ive found Seasonic M12 750W which seems to be nice and located on your list. If its not enough for two AMD Graphic cards ill follow your suggestion and get a good 550W PSU

Regarding the graphic card, ive read that the updated catalyst beta driver helps with the R9 290. It turns up the fan speed which is also more noice. However i figure with my case, where a 200mm fan is blowing air right onto the graphic card could help to cool it.

Also I have thought about if 8GB ram is fine for gaming? Can always add another 8GB later.

About the board, i read up on your suggestions. Most of the boards are in the same price range except for the Asrock Extreme3. Thats like half price here in Denmark comparing to the other boards and seems to have about the same features as the Asus Hero.

Hello again,

I have been reading a lot around on this forum, and it seems a lot of people suggest to go a bit down on CPU to get a better graphics card.

I've also tried to same some money and reached almost 200$ cheaper build. Also i get 3 free games from the Nvidia campaign when buying their card.

Could you help with comments about my new suggestion? :)

CPU : I5 4670K
MB : Asrock Extreme 3
GFX : GigaByte GTX 780 2.0
HD1 : Samsung EVO 120GB
HD2 : Seagate 1TB SATA600
CASE : Cosair 500R
PSU : XFX pro 550W
CDR : ASUSDRW
RAM : GS TridentX 2400 8 GB

I still aim to have a strong build which will last me a good long while. Also being able to play most game with as high settings as possible. Obviously i know its not as strong as my previous build, but hopefully its not too far behind :)

All your thoughts are greatly appreciated :)

No those are manufactured by HEC which is an incredibly sub par OEM for power supplies. You want something from Seasonic or Super Flower minimum.
