I agree with both the posts above. The 270X is on par with the 660 Ti. The 270X does run quite hot unless you turn up the fan speed by quite a bit. So you better have good airflow in your case. I have the 660 ti with only one exhaust fan and my temps are amazing at only 40% fan speed and still quiet.

At this date, the 270X is on par with the 660 Ti. They are about the same price however the TI has a superior packaging (unless you value Battlefield more than Splinter Cell Blacklist AND AC 4) The Ti is $10 cheaper and has about 3 frames lower than the 270X. Granted both cards max out Skyrim at 60+ fps.

What is comes down to is Do you like Nvidia or AMD more?

A few notes though:
If you will use a bigger resolution I'd go for the 270X (but the Ti produces slightly slower results)
http://www.hwcompare.com/15672/geforce-gtx-660-ti-vs-radeon-r9-270x/
the Ti has a lower power consumption by 30 watts.

Also the cards will trade blows in benchmarks as they are on par.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/R9_270X/13.html
This page shows it.

Also the 270x can substitute PhysX however the CUDA core by Nvidia allows for Advanced PhysX with special exclusive things that these videos show:

That is Water.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ztQX0C4wTE
This is a destructive world Demo (please note you can break apart the broken particles indefinitely.

Actually the 270X cannot do GPU PhysX and instead has to put it to the CPU for the particles. (which is generally slower)

Have none of you played AC 4? Not even a 780 TI can max it out at 60 fps. however, that's not cause of the card, its a good game but a terrible PC port. as for what card to buy the 270x is a waste of money, get a 270. You pay a lot less for a slightly lower clocked card but you can just OC it back up to a good speed.

Get the 660, it will last longer and save you a few bucks. While it is indeed slightly weaker it is also cheaper. Both cards are a good value and it comes down to is this: Are Nvidia features worth buying? Am I on a strict budget? or do I just want the most power available. The 660 is much cooler and if heat is an issue the clear winner. I believe it uses less power as well.

Because you own it it's the best? lol. Sound advice. The 270x is clearly superior to the older, slower 660 which was a over priced mid range card when it came out like a year ago , but hey you own it, so it must be "the best among both card", disregard every single benchmark out there everyone, black box owns it so it's better.

hey i dont know about r9 270x performance but i surely know the performance of gtx 660 and it can handle every games u thro at it @ 1080p and very high or ultra setting with nice FPS too.So need to worry and have a doubt about the performance of gtx 660. whereas the price is concerned the gtx 660 is around 14K and r9 270x is 18k. so if u are on budget go for gtx 660 and if no then also go for gtx 660 u will be more than happy that u purchased this amazing card. You wont regret the decision.
So its upto u my frnd where to go for Amd or Nvidia brand. I gave my suggestion to go for gtx.So DECIDE then

You should go with the R9 270X http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_1?rh=n%3A284822%2Ck%3Ar9+270x... as others have suggested. It's a better performer than the GTX 660 in general but the 660 isn't a bad card either.

I know this question is going on a couple months old now, but the 270x is slightly more expensive but also benchmarks seem to get about 5-10% more performance out of it.

Although, Newegg has a nice price on the ASUS DC2 GTX 660 right now until Jan 13th - $160 after $20 MIR + 10% off with promo, and it includes AC4:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121660

Definitely a good value, even if you miss out on a little bit of performance with particular games compared to a 270x. With the 800 series recently mentioned by Nvidia for March of this year, I would consider low price over anything right now for these older gen cards, unless of course you're in dire need of a card and can't make it 6 weeks.

Just wanted to point out that it's odd this bench shows a decent increase for the 270x for BF3 but with the same settings and 4x MSAA it shows the two cards equal on the Anand comparisons...they both show exactly 55FPS with theirs for both cards. While the 270x does pull out ahead in most other games, it's odd you linked a case where others seem to show differently.

just want to clear this up...are u deciding between gtx660 and r9 270'x'? remember 270 and 270x are 2 different cards usually compared against gtx 660 and 660ti respectively.. if ur question is still same, go for r9 270x..

@Black Box "It is the best among both cards" Are you daft? You own one card and can vouch for it's performance without knowing about the other's performance simply because you own it? And the prices you mentioned are in INR, which the OP may or may not be and differ widely from other countries. I know this post is old but I couldn't restrain from pointing out just how stupid you sound and how much of a lack of knowledge on the subject you voluntarily display in an online forum. Know what you are typing and you don't need to throw in your opinion where it isn't needed when it is far from the truth.

Don't get the r9 270. My friend has it and he has a bunch of artifact problems. We used different drivers and RMA for a new one but artifact problems still persist. I think u should stick with Nvidia until AMD does a massive overhaul of their drivers to fix these artifact problems. AMD has more raw power but Nvidia, in my opinion, has better quality cards. Even if the 660 is weaker its not by much, something like 2-4% weaker.

On paper, performance of r9 270x>gtx660ti>gtx760>r9270>gtx660.. i would stick on to asus nvidia dc2 cards for their incredible reliability..if u want to buy amd cards just because of 'Mantle' i hope u know the fact that mantle is supported only on a very few number of PC games..though many xbox/ps games support mantle..and i think it will be another 2-3 years for game devs to support mantle..currently there are 5-8 games that support mantle..

Edit 1: Sorry i read somewhere that asus cards sacrifice heatmanagement to keep noise low while msi cards keep noise low and keep the temps low as well.. i guess msi cards are better.. get twin frozr 3 or 4 card..

Seconded on the advice regarding getting an Asus, but while you're at it, please also sniff around for MSI and Zotac boards. The Asus boards are slightly dinky, and I have good reason to believe that these boards are somewhat hoggish when it comes to power (I've had the GTX 560ti). If your budget permits it, get the GTX 760 (although it's not significantly new, at least not 'Maxwell fresh', it's going to be plenty grunt for your system if you are willing to go easy on the AA). I have used the R9 270X OC, and while it regularly punches way above its weight, i have noticed sudden slowdowns and in-game artifacts, making it a slightly dodgy buy against GTX 760. Both buys are excellent, but with GTX 760, you will get better drivers backing up your experience.

If you dont wish to overclock the 270x you can go with gtx 660. Its not that bad. And it comes with 5 yrs warranty. My r9 270x has 3 yrs warranty. And This card gets really hot(75C). One more thing If you are planning to become a cuda programmer you should buy nvidia. 270x supports the OpenCL. plan ahead(Which i didnt). Happy Gaming
