Best GPU for < $400

What is the best GPU for next gen games (BF4, etc) for less than $400?
I've been looking at the GTX 770 4Gb and the Radeon 7970 3GB. Any others?

One of my friends says the 770 is not good because of its architecture, is that true? Also, I saw an article here on Tom's that showed the GTX 680 outperforming the 7970.

Brand recommendations would be nice, I'm looking at Gigabyte and Saphire.

280x or 290 atm are the best bang for the buck (280x is a 7970 GHz overclocked that outperforms 680 and is on pair with 770). However 290 if you can afford it looks the way to go, if you can wiat about 1 month you get a custom fan from MSI/gigabyte/Asus or other... that cools the card better than the stock blower fan.

The GTX770 is a great card, totally worth the asking price, that would be my Nvidia pick in this price range. The AMD side I would go with the R9 280X instead of the 7970. They are pretty much the same card, but the 280X has some newer and better stuff worked into the PCB to get the most out of that chip.

The GTX 680 and 770 are pretty much the same card, they have the same chip and equal specs, except the 770 comes clocked higher out of the box, and has some power and efficiency mods to the PCB to help get the most out of that graphics chip.

My personal pick is the GTX 770, I have one and I love that card. PLays anything I throw at it maxed out with no problems. The 280X would be a great buy from what I hear, it is a great performer, and it has a great price to boot. You would honestly be happy with either purchase :)

+1 to ksham on the EVGA recommendation, that is the one I own, fantastic card.

290 best buy, but i will never recommend it....over my grave, what they pulled off on us is unacceptable, we want aftermarket coolers now!.

Do the cooling problems apply to all the new R9 cards?

Not as far as I'm aware, the 290X runs REALLY hot, but they say it's supposed to. We should see some lower temps when the third party coolers come out, I'm kinda wary of cards running at 95C as a "norm"... The 280X doesn't run even close to that hot because it runs on a different chip that isn't pushed quite as close to the ragged edge :p I haven't heard of any problems in the lower cards either

Same problem but its tottaly worth the wait for the after market cooler, as a programmer myself i fully understand mantle aim of getting somewhere.

We all know that these promisses can be broken, but the market tells me this will become big.....yet as stated momentairly its a guess.

When after market will come, mantle will be out at the same time, exciting times!.

Got developers and friends here on total hold, waiting to see what this card can do!.
