We have a RAID10 with a failed hard drive and have a replacement but the HD has data on the drive. Do I need to format the drive prior to adding it to the raid or will the raid format the drive.

thank you for the information; I also should mention that this is on an HP-Ultrium with Unix on it.

Solution
It will rebuild automatically, you dont need to format the disk. If it doesnt rebuild automatically, you should be able to manually start it in the config software.

i woukd suggest formatting the hard drive to the same format as the other ones, so if your raid is in FAT32 format the spare HD in FAT32. If you have raid software, it might do it for you, but i would still do it before hand by using diskutility.

my coworker and I were at odds to on this, so we went with no formatting and it looks to be rebuilding. Thank you all for both responses.
