Hello, all. I want to upgrade my RAM. I currently have 8gb of G Skill Ripjaws X memory installed in my PC and want to add another 8gb. My memory configuration is 2 4gb sticks at 1866mhz. I was originally going to just get another set or this RAM, but then, after a little research online, discovered that my CPU, an AMD FX-8350 does not support quad channel memory and that running four sticks of RAM with this processor would keep RAM speed at 1600mhz or lower. My question is, should I just add another set of G Skill and be stuck at 1600mhz, or get a set of 16gb 2x8 RAM so I can get the 1866mhz RAM speed? If I should get completely new set of RAM, what would you suggest? Thanks.

What do you use your computer for? if its simply gaming there is no need for more than 8gb and I would just leave it alone. I run 16gb and unless I pop a couple of virtual machines up on my box I never use more than 7gb of memory so honestly 98% of what I do the 16gb doesn't help me. My first suggestion is just run 8gb you have now, if you really feel the need for 16gb, then your best bet is a 2x8gb kit as mixing kits (even if same model number) can be a pain and sometimes flat not work.

Couple of options - best bet is 2x8GB of 1866, say this for the reasons you've already explored, any time you mix DRAM sets it can be problematic, even if you were to get the same exact set, no guarantee they would play together,,,other option is to try a second set- whether or not they'll play is up in the air - if you do try this and have problems give me a shout, can probably get these sticks to play nice with voltage and timing adjustments though may well be at 1600 unless your CPU has a good strong MC (memory controller) and not all 8350s do
