Need advice on CPU/Mobo combo...Thanks!

Hey guys, I'm building a computer and trying to figure out what CPU/Mobo combo is worth going for...won't be doing any hardcore stuff on it, but would like it to be relevant for years and putting it in a mATX case

Was going to go to microcenter and take advantage of their CPU/Mobo combo deals. These are what I'm looking at right now

Options:

AMD FX-6300 w/ ASRock MB - $125

i5-3570K w/ Intel MB - $220 (this is the only 1155 mATX motherboard in stock at my microcenter)

i7-4770K w/ ASUS MB[microcenter.com] - $240

The rest of my build:

GPU: ASUS GEforce GTX 650Ti Boost 2gb
PSU: Corsair CX500M
HDD: WD Blue 1tb
SSD: Samsung EVO 120gb
Case (if it matters): Fractal Designs Core 1000

Any thoughts/advice?

Hold on. The i7-4770K w/motherboard is $240?!? I think that might be a mis-type, cause that's impossible :)

At any rate, I'd lean toward the i5 setup, unless for some unfathomable reason, the i7 was that price, which it's not :(

If you actually found a 4770k with ANY motherboard for $240 buy me like 150 of them please. I don't think you want an intel board with an i5, most intel boards REALLLLLY don't like to be OCed which is kind of the point of a K processor.

Well , what my advice is ASUS mobos because they are really reliable . If the third combo had an i5-4670k it would have been really really good because I do not see the point of getting an i7 unless you are doing hardcore video editing or something like that . The first combo is a decent one and cost efficient . As for me I would definately choose the ASUS mobo because I have never been dissapointed by their products. I do not know a lot about AsRock though, I have only heard from others mixed things but no personal experience.

I see you haven't choose a RAM kit yet ( or you forgot to post it ) . I recomment Gskill RAM , but if you found it rather expensive go for PNY, Kingston , Corsair .. these are all respected brands

Edit: OMG! Go for the 3rd one I just realized the prize and it is insane!

I would suggest:

i3-4130 ($130)
ASUS Z87-A ($145)

For $275 total you get an awesome dual-core, with an easy upgrade to an i5-4670K (or better) with O/C when you feel up to it. I would not be worried about dual-core vs. quad-core unless you KNOW 100% your software will multi-thread across all cores. So get a solid CPU and a solid Mobo with room to grow on the latest Haswell Architecture.

No typo on the i7.... $240 for the combo

From the sounds of the reactions, I should go with the i7 and consider myself lucky even though its overkill for what I'll be doing

I haven't bought the RAM yet, but I had heard good things about the G-skills and you've confirmed it so I'll prob go with that if I find a decent price

If nothing else buy a couple of those I7s, sell them on ebay, and use that money to build you a monster computer. The processor alone is worth way more than the $240, and anything you get out of the board would be gravy.


That is a complete no brainer and one you should go take advantage of RIGHT NOW, wait one last check which I7 is it? if its an I7 2XXX 3XXX or 4XXX its worth it if its like an I7 950 then I vote no.

It's an i7-4770K

I'll be going after work to pick this up and hopefully it works out. If not, then I don't think I'll be going wrong with the i5 either, but it looks like the FX-6300 is falling into third place

You cannot go wrong with that price, but I'd get a Z87 board for sure.

Z87 board will allow you to overclock the processor as you see fit, also has more lanes of PCI and I think better onboard sound, and just a generally better board. (perhaps more sata3 connectors?) it will actually unleash the deal you got when you bought the processor, btw the processor alone is $199, so get it that way and pair it with your own board.

Yeah, if you get an H81 board now, and ever get into overclocking (which you probably will, with a CPU like that), you'll have to get a new mobo and tear apart your rig just to replace it, as you can't oc with the H81 north bridge.

Just better for your dollar if you go ahead and get a slightly more expensive board now, so you won't have to address it in the future.
