I'm building a mid-range gaming computer for a friend. Specs as follow:

AMD FX 4100

Radeon 7870

8GB RAM

1TB HDD

80GB SDD

Some ol' AM3+ mobo

Any ideas? I was thinking maybe get the FX 8350, but some people where telling me it's bad.

Don't buy a 4100, at least get a 4300 (same price here in the states, and a much better peformer) if the 8350 is in your price range its a great processor (I'm an intel guy and yes I said that). If you're going to get a SSD I would go a bit bigger than the one you have maybe 120 gb. Price doesn't go up much to add it and it will let you keep most of your commonly used apps handy for quick loading on it.

The 'some people' telling you it is bad have it backwards.

The 4100/6100/8100 series AMD CPUs used the Bulldozer core and it was disappointing.

The new 4300/6300/8300 series CPU's from AMD use the Vishera core and it is the better of the 2.

Instead of a 4100, I'd recommend the FX 6300 for a midrange gaming PC. Tom's also recommends the FX 6300 as a great budget gaming CPU. I can say from personal experience it is a great overclocker on a budget.

The FX 8350 is better, but it also needs more robust power and cooling. This will push your cost up.

For an AM3+ Motherboard, the ASRock 970 Extreme 3 is a good option to couple with an FX 6300.

The motherboard you mentioned is the one I'm getting, I remember now. The FX 6300 sounds pretty good, though. Overclocking probably won't be necessary, because FSX will be the main game being played on this system. FSX should run pretty decent, I guess, so. I think I might end up with the 6300.

the 8350 is a beast and can OC to keep up with most i5's even after OC. if its in the budget get it. if not the 8250 can OC to the same as a stock 8350. and it pairs great with that card. (both the 8350 and 8350 do) if not in budget the fx-6300 is you best bet
