I do a bit of repair work on the side, and I find myself cleaning up/fixing laptops.

If I plug a laptop hdd into a spare port and back up the user data, is there any way malware from the laptop drive can effect my system?

My gut says no. I think that anything on there would need that hdd's OS to be running instead of mine, and even if I copy them I should be all right since they aren't going to places they'd normally need to go to run.

I just wanted to check and make sure there isn't something I'm missing.

Yes, you can easily get a virus just from plugging in an infected hard drive. Setup a second computer for dealing with any drives like this. To make sure things are clean, use a Linux boot disk as the operating system and just have a small hard drive for holding any temporary files on for people, no way for a virus to infect a read only boot CD. You can also run any off-line virus scans using a rescue disk on such a system.
