Why does bf4 run so awfully with my setup?

So I have a Radeon hd 7850, an Athlon II X4 640 3.0ghz quad core processor, and 8gb of ram. I usually get like under 25 frames on low. Bf3 ran at above 30 on high settings. According to the research I've done bf4 should at least run ok at med to high settings. Anyone have an idea why it runs so bad?

here is a comparison between the FX 6300 and the Athlon X4 640, as you can see the FX 6300 completely trumps the Athlon in all ways and has 6 integer cores to boot! It's definitely a good product and always a recommended buy from me. However, assuming you don't want to dump too much money on an upgrade (if you feel like it's not time to upgrade yet), I kinda want to say pass for now, since the FX 6300 requires an AM3+ motherboard which you may or may not have.
However, if you feel like this is the time to get an upgrade for your PC, I would definitely suggest getting the FX 6300 along with a decent 970 chipset AM3+ motherboard like...

I actually only have the 1gb version of the video card. in the properties it lists dedicated video memory as 1024 and shared system memory at 3838. So you think I'd need a better video card then?

If you got "above 30 on high" in BF3 then I would say you're doing pretty good at 25 FPS on low. I got over 140 FPS on Ultra in BF3 and I dropped to 40 FPS on medium in BF4 with the same setup. BF4 is a much more complex and demanding game, and it shows.

I get that, it was the first thing I thought but then I stumble upon things like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcA2H3lg8PM. I know his processor is better but that's a HUGE difference in FPS from not even 1ghz. I'm no computer expert by any means but that doesn't seem quite right does it?

No information on what else is in his set up, and more importantly, what resolution he is running. I wouldn't recommend comparing your computer to someone else's unless they are running with the EXACT same components. Even then there will probably be some fluctuation. Maybe his GPU is watercooled and overclocked. Who knows?

Yeah the 7850 1 Gb is a bit weak for this game, however there can be a many different factors that have a significant effect on your gameplay experience, have you tried updating your drivers? Or overclocking your CPU?
Having the proper drivers for your GPU can massively boost performance potentially, and for the video you linked, his i5 3570k is MUCH stronger than your Athlon, and it does indeed make a difference. In your specific case, I've seen reports of the i5 3570k being anywhere from 50-100% stronger than your Athlon X4 640.

Also you could try changing your resolution, assuming you are attempting 1080 atm, a drop down to the next level (1680x1050) should yield better results, and might bring you up to 40 ish on low.

And just as a helpful tip, always take what you read with reviews and benchmarks with a grain of salt because they often have some factors that a regular consumer can't replicate. For example, when a publication such as Tom's Hardware does a benchmark for a game or a piece of hardware (say the GPU), they usually have a test system setup where the system can truly test the capabilities of the variable hardware without concern of bottlenecking, so they'll often have an extremely strong processor (current/newer benchmarks often use i7 3770k/4770k@stock or overclocked) paired with a dozen different GPU cards.

Ah ok I didn't realize there was such a large difference. I have tried most of the things you've suggested. I think then it'd be the most logical solution to upgrade my processor then right? Would this be sufficient? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113286
Or perhaps I should go for an eight core? I'd just like it to run at high-ish settings at around 30fps like what bf3 ran like for me. Sorry for being so helpless about the whole thing and thanks for all the help!

for a good processor/mobo combo that will last you for quite a while, and when the time comes where it's performance is waning a bit (1-2 years I'd wager) you can give it an overclock to juice it up until you are ready for your next upgrade.
An 8 core from AMD is also a good option but only get it if your budget will allow for it, since the last place you want to take money away from is the motherboard.

Thanks so much! I actually do have an am3+ compatible motherboard so I'll probably go ahead and pick that up soon.

I also have a 1gb 7850 and an athlon 2 x4 640. I can't speak for the full release version of BF4 but I played the beta on low at 60 fps 1080p. I've overclocked my cpu to 3.4ghz and my video card to core 1000mhz and mem 1200mhz. I also use 8 gb of 1333 Gskill ram so I'm pretty confused about your post. Although I agree that you should get an FX-6300 which is 109$ on newegg today you should still get better frames. I hope that when Mantle comes out youll be able to squeeze some FPS out of your rig.
