I'm building a $1000 gaming rig, and I still can't decide on the GPU, between a EVGA GeForce GTX770 2GB GDDR and a Gigabyte R9 280X GDDR5-3GB.
I've seen lots of benchmarks on both, and I know they're pretty even when it comes to performance, sometimes one is better than the other one and the other way around, but I really can't decide.

I still have some doubts regarding the MOBO, I'm not sure if I should get a Gigabyte Z87 LGA 1150 GA-Z87-D3HP or a Gigabyte Z87 LGA 1150 GA-Z87X-OC, so if you have any comments on these I'd appreciate it.

The extra 1GB of VRAM on the R9 won't really do me good, as I don't plan on going over 1080p for gaming, and the most that I would do be dual 1080p displays. Also, the R9 is about $40 cheaper than the GTX, but if the GTX is better I wouldn't mind paying them.

I want to future proof my rig as much as I can with the $1000 budget in mind, so that's why it' so hard for me to decide.

Any tips and comments on things such as the good about Nvidia over AMD, what's good on AMD over Nvidia and which is more future proof would be greatly appreciated. I also plan on playing emulators such as Dolphin and PCSX2, so if you know how either of them would perform with these, let me know.

Here's the build:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87 LGA 1150 GA-Z87-D3HP or
Gigabyte Z87 LGA 1150 GA-Z87X-OC
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card or
EVGA GeForce GTX770 SuperClocked 2GB GDDR5
Memory: Patriot Viper 3 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Power Supply: Corsair CX750 Builder Series ATX 80 PLUS Bronze
Fan: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan (RR-212E-20PK-R2)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2 TB HDD SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache

I vote for the r9 280x, you seem to know everything about it but i'll try to illustrate it for you why i chose the r9. The extra 1GB of vram is important even if you are going to game on 1 monitor 1080p, if you ever intend on playing on 2 monitors 1080p before upgrading the gpu then the r9 280x is no brainer. For 1 monitor 1080p, some games are already using near 2gb or even more than it when played at ultra settings with 4x MSAA as bf4 http://gamegpu.ru/images/remote/http--www.gamegpu.ru-images-stories-Test_GPU-Action-Battlefield_4-test-bf4_vram.jpg crysis 3 http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/crysis_3_graphics_performance_review_benchmark,8.html bioshock infinite http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/bioshock_infinite_graphics_performance_review_benchmark,8.html and more, i know you dont play these games (you didnt mention them) but i used them as a general example. However, if you dont mind lowering the AA settings a bit and tweaking settings to suit your 2gb of vram, then gtx 770 will be suitable. As you said, they both have nearly the same performance, so why should you opt for a certain company over the other? For AMD, it has the new mantle API which is thought will use the hardware of the PC (gpu more specifically) directly giving increase in performance more about mantle is here http://www.anandtech.com/show/7400/the-radeon-r9-280x-review-feat-asus-xfx/2 . On the other hand, nvidia has its interesting g sync which will eliminate lag and stutters and tearing and hence will make the refresh rate of screen dynamic to equalize the number of frames the gpu can render, it is expected to make low FPSes as 30 fps looks smooth, more about g sync with some of v sync here http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/nvidia_g_sync_preview_article,1.html , thats all i can remember about companies new projects and steps. Sorry about the games and motherboard, i dont know much about them but if the second motherboard will allow you to OC the cpu more vigorously, then this will add to the r9 280x being cheaper and saving money for the MB.

Well I plan on doing some hardcore gaming, so let's say Crisys 3, Metro Last Light and Battlefield 4 as a reference.

Now, the Mantle is really selling me on the R9. Given the new gen consoles have AMD architecture and that according to what I've read Mantle uses the same Low level API the Xbox One uses, this would theoretically give AMD an edge when it comes to porting console games to PC and also a big boost on games written with Mantle in mind from the start.

Yea, thats what im talking about. Currently, its not supported except by frostbite 3 (bf4) and thief coming in 2014, but i think that most of console games ported to pc will support it or at least large proportion of them. Dont forget about the gsync, it can get nvidia back into competition but then the vram holds nvidia back again as i showed in some games above. Since you said you might be using dual 1080s, r9 280x is no brainer, but if you want to stay with nvidia, then gtx 770 4gb can do it as well but for more money, i cant tell if you can afford it. For the 4gb gtx 770, sli after maybe 2 years when it start to suffer running games at ultra (maybe this will take more than 2 years), you can sli second 4gb one so that you can utilize all of the 4 gb of vram with incredible performance of gtx 770 sli. If you decided to do what i mentioned latter (sli), you must make sure that your psu can handle this a quality 750W psu like seasonic or XFX or corsair is recommended for such system assuming you will OC the cpu, only the more expensive MB oc will support SLI though so if this goes out of your budget, just stick with the r9 280x (;
