I just inherited an asus essentio desktop that was purchased over the summer.

These are the main components:

4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-4770 processor
Features an 8MB L3 cache and 3.4GHz processor speed with Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz.
Intel® Core™ i7 processor

16GB DDR3 memory

2TB Serial ATA III hard drive (5400 rpm)
.
NVIDIA GT 625 graphics
Feature 2GB dedicated video memory for lush images with intricate detail. HDMI output for connection to an HDTV.

I have an option to put a GTX 260 in this machine. I know the gt625 is not a great card and eventually I am going to upgrade the VC and power supply. My main goal here is to be able to play knights of the old republic online. Which card would be better for that?

Many, many thanks

try and bench, then install the other, then bench again.

the one is too old (though a good card in its time) but is hot and power hungry, the one is pretty weak (but more recent)

If this is your card: http://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-625-2048/dp/tec...
... I wasn't even aware Nvidia made one of those. But from the specs, I'd say it would be a real challenge playing any modern game well on it at 1080p. It appears to be basically the GT 625M laptop chip on a desktop card.

Yes that is my card. Thanks for the answers. Yeah its hard finding info on it as every 625 I see out there is mobile. That should have been my first clue lol.

Without a doubt the 260 would be the better card, the 625 is just an entry level OEM card, the 260 even today is a fairly competent gaming card at the level of a GTX 650/7750

Well the GTX 260 is way more powerful, but it doesn't support DirectX 11. Just make sure the game supports DX9 or DX10.

Since you all have been so helpful, which card would you recommend for this system which is just going to be used for online gaming. the 350w ps is going to have to be swapped out also.

Any card would be paired well with that system and new PSU

Something like this would be great for online gaming

If you stay with your existing PSU, go with the HD 7750. Amazing card for the money and the 55W of power it consumes maxed out. If you want to invest in a new PSU, your budget will be your limit.
