I'm getting a 4 TB hard drive to use for storage. I want to be positive the drive doesn't have any issues before putting data on it. Would it better to use a manufacturer's utility like Seagate's SeaTools to thoroughly test the drive for any problems before formatting since those utilities are better at checking a drive than the regular Windows full format?

My thinking is that a Windows full format on a 4 TB drive is already going to take a long time so I might as well do a thorough hard drive diagnostic, even if it might take a little longer, for the peace of mind. Then I can do a Windows quick format on the drive afterwards.

Or do you think this is overkill and I should just do a Window full format?

I also plan on encrypting the drive afterwards so yea it's going to take awhile till I actually get to use the darn thing.

I got a seagate 4TB a while back (Only plugged in when backing up which is a once a month thing only because a drive clone takes almost 24 hours for me)

If anything and if your going to be using this drive on a daily basis I would try using a program that can write to it. Like some kind of drive erase program that can write 0's or 1's to the whole hard drive. Do like a 3 pass (Which will take a long LONG time) BUT this will find any defects from the gekko and you will have less issues later on. From my experience of failed drives they either fail years later or within the first 2-3 months.
