Depends on your budget. Single card is always preferred unless you're upgrading an older build or going super high end.

Basically, it's usually cheaper to get a single good card that beats 2 SLIed cards in performance, but if you already have 1 card, then a year later, decide to get another one, may as well only pay another x amount for a 2nd of the same card since the stronger card would cost a bit more.

Never spend your money on a build based on sli.
Buy the best board, chip and graphics you can afford/need for 4 years,
and plan to build a new pc then.
Many new graphics cards wont even last 2 yrs.
The possibility of finding a cheap working match later that will last is getting lower.
Micro stutter causing individual frame rate drop in sli is still not resolved.
In short, the extra you pay for the mboard is generally wasted unless you
normally run 3 monitors.

See, this is where budgets come in though, If you're like me, where you can't afford a 400+ dollar card straight up, buying a 660 now and then another one in a year or so, it helps tremendously.

and unless you're buying outdated cards it won't be hard to find another of the same model.
