I have a new Geoforce GTX 780 graphics card that Im trying to hook up in my Dell XPS pc. The geoforce has a place to plug in a six pin plug and a place to plug in an 8 pin plug. My motherboard needs a four pin plug.

My new power supply has two six pin plugs and two four pin plugs. I have tried plugging in one six pin to the video card and one four pin plug into the mother board and that resulted in an error message on startup that said something to the effect of the video card not having power.

I then tried plugging in one six pin plug into the video card, both four pin plugs into the video card and the six pin plug to the motherboard with two pins hanging over the side. that resulted in the pc not starting up.

i then tried plugging in two six pin plugs into the video card and one four pin plug into the motherboard and got the no power to card error again.

Is there some way of hooking it up that I'm missing or do I need to return my new power supply and buy a new one?

<Edit> Its running. Getting a quality power supply solved my problem. Thanks for all the input

Trust me on this one. Junk units like that often can't put out their rated wattage and have very poor voltage regulation and are 'dirty' with high ripple and noise. Meaning you risk damaging components using them especially under a high load. If you had a GT 210 I would say keep it. It would never be strained. But a GTX 780? No way.

The power supply is truly the most important part of your computer. Without clean, stable power you will not have a stable system.

Any good 600w unit will have the connectors you need. That is the first hint that the Coolmax is junk. You need 1 x 6+2 pin and 1 x 6 pin minimum.

The EVGA I listed above has 4 x 6+2 pin. The Antec has 2 x 6+2 pin and the Seasonic also has 2 x 6+2 pin connectors. The +2 part...

I assume you have a semi modular PSU. Still curious what PSU you have but there should be a slot on your card for the PCIE cord that came with the card and plug the other end into the PSU. Of course assuming this is your error.

I have a Coolmax 700 watts semi modular PSU. It does have the red plug with six pins but just that doesn't seem to be enough for the card unless I'm hooking it up wrong somehow.

That power supply only has 2 x 6 pin PCI-E connectors. That is a very good thing in your case because Coolmax translates to power supply shaped object not fit to recharge a 9v battery. Literally one of the worst brands on the market.

Tier list. Hint: Start looking in tier 5.

Replace that thing as fast as you can. It is truly and without exaggeration complete trash.

OK, that being said you need a good 600w unit. While a good unit will not cost $30 like the Coolmax it also will not blow up and take the rest of your computer with it either.

Trusted brands include Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling, XFX, Silverstone, Enermax, OCZ, Antec and Rosewill.

If you are in the US this is a very good deal on the EVGA SuperNova 650w model for $69 after rebate. Although not on my list above they might be soon. They are new to power supplies and are quite good so far.

If you don't want to deal with a rebate the Antec EA650 is $75 shipped.

Personally with a high end graphics card like the GTX 780 I would spend a bit more and go for a higher end power supply like this Seasonic G series 650w model for a still good price of $99.

So how many six pin plugs do I need on the new power supply for my new video card to work? its three right? two for the flux compaciter looking thing that plugs into the 8 pin slot and one to go in the six pin slot right?

<edit> Im not able to try the one 6 pin connection and one four pin connection into the video card idea because the other half of that four pin connection is semi attached to it and that part is stuck at my motherboard. i could roll back the binding and try to separate them but if i bought a sub par power supply that i need to return tomorrow anyway I don't want to run into any condition issues with it.
