Hey guys, have recently been mulling over upgrading my old Pentium 4 HT 530 (3.0GHZ, Stock). I have been researching a bit and have come across this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002973RW0/sr=1-6/qid=1384838111/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1384838111&seller=&sr=1-6

It's an intel Core2Quad Q8200 ~2.33Ghz Quad-Core CPU
I am considering getting it used as it is $40 and i'm not so fazed about new factory stock.
I was wondering if you guys could help me deduce whether the CPU would work well on my system:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L (Revision 1.1) http://www.gigabyte.com.au/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2889&dl=1#ov
OS: Windows XP Home Premium 32 Bit
CPU: Pentium 4 HT 530 ~3.0GHz (Stock)
Ram: 1GB DDR2 800MHz (Will have 3GB At single Channel)
GFx Card: NVidia 9500GT 512mb (DDR2 Edition)
Storage: 1x 160GB Sata2 HDD
1x 80GB Sata2 HDD
Optical Drives: 1x CD-R/RW + DVD-R/RW Optical Drive
PSU: 450 Watts (am quite sure it is generic, will post pictures if necessary)
Peripherals: 1x Wireless Adaptor 300mbps (USB)
1x USB Lexmark Printer (Occasionally)

These are my specs and can be expanded if necessary, thank you for your time guys and will be waiting intently :)

One of my friends has a Q8200 and a GTX 560 SE.. It will perform around the Celeron G530, so you can say that it's shit compared to modern CPUs, but it'll handle most of the games on basic settings if you buy a new GPU, and AT LEAST 4 GB of RAM.. If you want a gaming system, anything below 4 GB is just a joke nowadays.. But yeah, compared to your P4, this thing will be aces.

You can still buy a $30 LGA1155 motherboard and install a better CPU, like a "high-end" 3rd gen. Pentium or the cheapest 2nd ~ 3rd gen. i3, but that will end up much above $40.. Win XP is a trusty OS, but if you are aiming at gaming, ditch it when you buy more RAM and install 7 or 8.. I recommend Win 7, because you'll have a bit higher in-game performance with it (at least it's like that for now).

its an obsolete socket but if you just want a small boost until you can afford a new build then get that cpu and 4gb ram (*2gbx2) and a cheap card. this is a good build using your parts and upgrading ram/cpu ( i picked comparable stuff with same specs not exact parts)

this is an upgrade for cheap and i play on my laptop with the same chip and just on board graphics and in world of warcraft i get 25fps while questing.

Core 2 Quad Q8200 may be shit compared to my i7-3770K, but trust me, the difference between it and a P4 530 is light years.. For us, it may seem like a weak, old, chip, but it is not going to be a "small boost" in comparison to a P4 Prescott.. The difference is like comparing a 386SX 33 MHz to a Pentium II 450 MHz.. The guy really will see a huge improvement, especially when adding more RAM.

i guess you are right when you consider the difference i saw with going from p4 to my core 2 duo e7500 and again to from there to core 2 quad. this should be a huge change after getting 4gb ram. my only concern is that he will fall into the same hole im in where another part breaks and he can no longer repair/upgrade with that socket for a cost effective price. this is why i thought to upgrade mobo and cpu would be smart

Yeah, I also provided him with the same advice, but yet again, if his budget is too limited, he won't be able to buy both a new mobo and CPU at the same time..

Thanks for the help guys :), I'm gonna accept all your advice and not buy the quad core, instead i'm gonna buy a dual core CPU and invest the extra money in a new rig. Thanks guys :) you are the best!

Waaaait, whatt? 1st: You cannot put a non-775 socket CPU on a 775 motherboard and 2nd: There's no point at buying a Core 2 Duo or a Pentium D, because they are too obsolete.. The best choice for your motherboard is the Q8200 for $40.. You cannot install a new CPU on that motherboard, because the sockets are different.. If you are not planning to replace the motherboard, get the Q8200 and forget about anything else, because it will not be worth it..
