Should I wait for DDR4?

Hi there,

I am in the process of upgrading all of the components in my PC as I still have a 775 motherboard and DDR2 RAM. At the end of the upgrade, my build will be as follows:

MSI Intel Z87-G45
Intel Core i7 4770K 3.5GHz
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3-1600
Samsung SSD 840 EVO
Radeon HD 6870 (not upgrading this for the time being)

But my friend has told me to wait for DDR4 because that is coming soon. But I feel like this will take a while and will probably be expensive.

So my question is - should I continue with my build above or should I wait for DDR4?

Thanks!
Amy

Do not bother, as it is we can barely use the bandwidth that DDR3 has to offer.

The mainstream platforms like Z87 will not be using DDR4 for at least a another 2 generations anyway. So you could be waiting a good 2 years.

Now, to optimize your build.

What will you be doing with your build?
What is your budget?
What are you re-using?
What EXACT PSU do you have?

Yeah I agree, don't bother, there's no reason to upgrade the RAM for the time being. Especially with RAM as expensive as it is, a 16GB DDR3 set already retails for $135. A 16GB DDR4 set I'm guessing will retail for somewhere around the $250 range. And that's not really that wise of an investment right now.

Okay great, thanks!

Novuake, to answer your questions:

- I will be doing some media editing (Photoshop, maybe make some home movies), music recording (using Cubase, probably), gaming, and the other usual office stuff.
- I am looking at spending about $800 (which is R8000 in South Africa and the parts are more expensive here than in the US).
- I am reusing my current hard drives, DVD drive, PSU and GPU. I just bought the CPU cooler, SSD and Cooler Master HAF 912 Advanced last week.
- My PSU is a Corsair GS600.

Oh yay, a South African! No, not Afrikaans, although I can speak it somewhat :)

I don't actually plan on overclocking. So I suppose I shouldn't be getting a K processor then? But I just wanted to keep my options open with that, I suppose, in case someday I do want to overclock.

What board would you suggest?

most builds dont need ram faster than 1600 or 1833 to max out. The one thing you can be sure of is enough ram is more important than ram speed except for certain onboard graphics sets. If you are not overclocking, check out the 3350p. It can be run at 3.7 gig on its turbo boost and has disabled graphics. (its the way intel sell the faulty graphics chips)

Using an I7, not I5, for editing. :)
