flashing wifi icon

In Windows 7, I keep getting a flashing WiFi icon in the middle of the page showing connected or not connected (red line thru it). How do I get rid of this?

Is this doing this on a laptop or a desktop?

Laptops will usually have a button or a Fn key combination to turn it on and off.

First, my mistake - it is Windows XP. It is a netbook that has an on/off WiFi button that supposedly has been disabled because broken and I am using an external adapter. My guess is the button was not completely disabled. But you made me think I might just be able to stop the flashing by turning the supposedly disabled button off - Voila I think that worked. Duh do I feel stupid. Thank you!
