I have been using my WD My Book 3TB External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 File Backup and Storage for a couple years with no problems, then when I plugged it in to back up some data it would not mount.

Long story short I tried to recover it and have probably done more damage than good but after I took the hard drive out of the case it has shown only as 746 GB (in the case it wont even mount). Its formated as NFTS GPT now and only shows one partition of 746 GB. Even when I boot into a linux disk it shows 746 GB.

I have tried running TestDik and Gparted with no luck. I hope to somehow recover the as much data as possible still. It was pretty much full when it all happened.

Any ideas?

Yeah the WD 3tb does something funky to get the drive to work right. the 746 your seeing is whats left after the max 2.2tb 2bit partition. The problem is that the board in the enclosure contains format and partition information. You need to replace the board and access the drive thru the enclosure. I don't know if what you've done so far has made data recover impossible now or not.
