First time building a computer
build 1: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/24JDo
build 2: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/24JAH
Reasoning for parts:
no aftermarket cooler on the intel build because I'm not going to be overclocking it as I wouldn't need to
no ssds because I'm not paying 100-200 bucks just so I can start programs and my OS mere seconds faster
the hyper 212 evo on the AMD build is just a placeholder, I'm gonna get either the rajintek themis or rajintek aidos if I can find them. The r9 290 is also a placeholder (kind of), if I go with build 2 I'll wait for aftermarket r9 290 coolers.
games I'm gonna play:
SC2, Metro: Last Light, BF4, Possibly Crysis 3, Arma 3 (heavily), DayZ when it comes out and others that I assume either build will have no trouble maxing out (tf2, dota 2, garry's mod etc) played on one of these 4 monitors:
any standard 1920x1080 60hz 24 inch monitor i can find for a good price

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236331
http://www.amazon.com/QNIX-QX2710-Evolution-LED-Monitor/dp/B00BUI44US/ref=pd_cp_pc_0
I also need help with the monitors, is the extra money for any one of these worth it over a normal 1080p one?
Also, how much case cooling would I need for either build, likely with gpu overclocks

Do you plan to crossfire in the future and are you completely against over clocking?

Edit: Actually this PSU is a better choice. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-ss850am

Also forgot to answer the question on the monitor. The benefit of the one that I chose is the 144hz refresh rate and 1ms response time. It makes gameplay very smooth assuming you have a video card capable of delivering 100+ FPS like the R9 290. If your not interested with the higher refresh rate than I suggest going with this monitor http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-monitor-vx238h

For the case cooling I would wait and see how the aftermarket coolers do on the 290. It also depends on you ambient temperatures. I haven't done any heavy over clocking on my 7970 as of yet, the over clocking I did do didn't get me over 60c though.

Most of this is good, but for motherboard go for z87 Extreme4 has the same perfomance but cheaper, For Ram stick with 8gb coz to be able to run BF4 smoothly you need 6gb and lastly If youre going to overclocking the i5 you dont need 4670k just get 4670 it is cheaper than 4670k

Ps: AMD is giving away BF4 for customers that is buying the R9 series, be fast coz only 1000 copies are available

I do plan to crossfire later, and overclock on the gpu. I'll also probably buy a really nice aftermarket cooler for the cpu later when it gets old and there's an actual benefit to overclocking it. Also, the 1440p monitor I linked can oc massively to 120hz, would it still be worth buying the 144hz monitor?
Also, I'm buying all parts from newegg and amazon

is the dual-x r9 280x as loud and bad as the vapor-x?

I actually missed that is was 1440p... well if you are after the higher resolution go for it. But keep in mind that just because its possible to OC to 120hz doesnt mean you will. Most of those can go over 100hz but theres still a chance that you wont even get above 100. the 144hz is guarenteed 144hz with the potential of overcloking higher.

I don't think so.
