pok guys i have sapphire HD 7970 VAPOR-X 6gb in windows reads Dedicated VRAM 2048 mb while gpu-z reads it 6144 mb and so in the catalyst hardware info but in cpu-z it reads it 4096 mb and so in dxdiag anyway iam not that impressed with this card so i want to ask if i get the R9 290X OR THE GTX 780 will it be worth the upgrade ? and which is better to get gtx 780 or r9 290x i been searching for benchmarks and i think those two r pretty close to performance but i see that the R9 290x gets the edge in some games

i have i5 3570k at stock speed (3.4)

MSI z77 mpower

12 gb ram kingstone hyper X 1333

seasonic 850 watt

my display resolution is 1680 * 1050 i like to play all games at ultra with smooth fps which i dont get much with my card in heavy games like metro or batman AC or crysis 3 but in bf4 i make it ultra with 120% screen resolution in AC4 every this is very high but antialiasing on EQAA 2x (4x)

More about : upgrading sapphire vapor 7970 6gb 290x gtx 780

I don't think there are any 6GB cards. I'm sure your HD 7970 has 2Gb of VRAM. Why upgrade ? your current GPU can max out many games already. You could use the money to get a SSD or just save it.

Well the 290x or 780 isn't the biggest upgrade at all. And with you only playing 720p you shouldn't experience a lot of lag at all. If you have the budget and want the best upgrade it will be a 780ti. If you really want to get either the 780 or 290x then the best choice is the 290x, and it's cheaper, but you wont get the greatest fps increase. Personally i wouldn't upgrade it at all. I'd wait for future next-gen cards or upgrade something else.

there is the sapphire vapor-x and toxic 6gb cards and also the 7990 and the gtx titan all of those are 6gb cards but my case windows reads it as 2gb dedicated VRAM i thought of getting 3 or 4 gb cards to use the whole VRAM as i got the 6gb card thinking it will dedicate the 6gb ram but after some search i found that it uses 2gb per monitor and i only have 1 so thats y i thought of the upgrade

You don't need to 6Gb of VRAM if you are only using one 1680 x 1050 monitor

The 6gb doesn't improve your FPS at all. The GPU rams is ONLY for more monitors than one. If you wish to have two monitors, then 4gb would be decent, if 4-6 monitors, a 6gb ram would be neccessary.
Have you updated your GPU?

The newest update is 13.11.. This update has a huge impact on your FPS. Update your GPU and try out the games, they will definitely run MUCH better.

How good do you run BF4 ultra? Do you get below 20-30 fps?

In which PCIE slot did u insert the card? It should be the 16x for achieving maximum power from your GPU

Sorry, however, you are a bit incorrect on this info.

I am looking to get some cards for a new LiteCoin rig, and sure enough there is a 7970 OC-ed with 6GB of listed ram on amazon. So he must have purchased one of the models at this link: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_n_feature_four_bro_...

However, I am probably going with an R9 290X.

As for the original inquirer, I do know that the R9 290X performs about 15% better than the R9 290, which definitely performs better than your 7970, even with the 6GB of ram.

And I have come across some preliminary benchmarks, in my search for new mining gear, where the 290x seemed to out-pace the GTX-780.
