Failing at mapping a drive over internet/IP

I have a 4 computers network at work, one of them is a "server" which has databases that are used by a program on the other 3 computers, so on those 3 computer I have mapped a drive (v:) with a shared folder from the "server", the software uses this drive (v:) to work.
Now we are trying to move to work at home, so I'm testing a computer at home, the driver obviously can't connect since it was on a local network, so I've been trying to map it again failing on every attempt.

Methods I've tried include: \\ip\c$\sharedfolder; \\NetBios\shared folder; \\ip\shared folder; \\NetBios\c$\sharedfolder.

I've set up an ftp server with HFS on server, when I try to connect I can see on HFS the computer trying to connect (requesting) but after a while I get a failed attempt.
I can ping server from the computer successfully. All computers have the same group name. All computers are on Windows XP service pack 3. As I said, everything works fine on the local network,

Due to the nature of the software I use I do need to have the drive mapped, all the data is created at the "server" and the software create tables and stats from the databases on the server.

Thanks for any help.

Just so I am understanding you correctly. You have several machines on a network at work. You have a machine at home, you are trying to map a drive from the home machine to the work machine correct? I'm going to assume you are connecting over the internet (and don't have a REALLY long cable). How are the work machines (in particular, the "server") connected to the internet, and how is the home machine connected to the internet?

Server is at work, it has a shared folder where all the data is created, it connects to internet using a router, so every other pc at work has internet from the local network. My PC is at home, it connects to internet via my own router. If my understanding of the question is correct (English is not my main language) it connects just like any computer connected to the router.
