Case: Thermaltake USB3.0 Commander MS-III $58
PSU: Antec Neo Eco 80Plus Bronze 620 $89
DVD Drive: MSI SATA 22x $16
Total: $870 AUD
This will easily run BF4 at high setting

Much higher than my budget though particularly with a monitor so would be good to know if I could cut costs anywhere..

Those are really good builds. If you dont really need ssd, you better take it off your list, find cheaper case and spend that money on the monitor.
You could choose either build of your friends. I reckon go with the first one it has more watts on power supply.
If you can spend more money, I recommend you getting gtx760 rather than hd7950, coz nvidia is always faster than amd/ati
