Maximum memory in netbook

Hi, I have an Asus EEE PC 1000HE netbook and want to upgrade its memory. There is only one "SO-DIMM/200 pins" slot available (now occupied by a 1GB module). In its specs, it is said that it supports max 2GB memory.

I found a 4GB SO-DIMM and I was wondering, what the 2GB restriction might come from?

I understand that its OS (XP-32bit) will only see 3.5GB (out of the 4GB), but it is more than 2GB and wanna exploit this extra space.

I looked into your netbook and it does specify 2GB maximum. They give these restrictions because that is all the motherboard can handle, you may (and probably will) get BSODs because you are overloading your system.

Since you already have 1 GB occupying a slot and seeing that there is only 1 SO-DIMM slot available, just buy a 2GB SO-DIMM RAM and call it a day.

Hope this helps!

It's a motherboard restriction.
Netbooks are built with price and portability in mind so they sacrifice even the smallest forms of additional power (i.e. Memory) in favor of a lower cost. They aren't really built with doing anything more than what 2GB RAM can handle in mind. I do realize that certain browsers, applications, and web-pages will eat up your memory but that's just an unfortunate side affect.

Thank you both for your answers so far..

As a hardware engineer I'm trying to understand where this restriction comes from. The reasons I can think of are:

1) the internal power supply is not designed to provide this little (but) extra current required by a 4GB module
2) the motherboard PCB does not have the required extra track(s) to address 4GB
3) the BIOS is limited to 2GB
4) the chipset is limited to 2GB
5) at the time the netbook was designed, maximum SO-DIMM capacity was 2GB, so it's just an outdated limitation

I've also emailed Asus and waiting for their response..

It could be any number of these reasons but is likely intentional in any case. I wouldn't waste too much time trying to figure out "why" it's restricted unless you're going to try to hack your way around it.

For that form factor, could they get 4GB in there? Sure but they opted for a cheaper MB with a cheaper chipset to make the final cost cheaper.
