Issues booting with SATA add-on card attached (Windows 8)

I have just recently shipped my server to another country (Australia) and whenever I try and boot with any hard drives attached to the Sata expander ((Silicon Image SoftRaid 5 Controller) used due to not having enough ports on the mb) my computer hangs at the Windows 8 loading screen. If I unplug the Sata ports from the expander it boots perfectly but I obviously can't access all my drives, I've made sure the boot order is correct, updated the Sata card drivers and tried plugging the boot drive into the expander and motherboard. If there is a single drive attached to the expander the computer will not boot into Windows. The frustrating thing is that it gets to the loading screen so it's finding the OS drive but then not completing. I am not using a Raid setup just adding Sata ports and the card is connected via PCI. Is there something I'm missing?
