Skyrim FPS rate dropping after 5-10 mins of playing time?

I used to play Skyrim on my current computer on Med-High settings without any major problems until it crashed (unrelated) and I had to re-install windows. Upgraded recently to Windows 8.1 and then decided to re-install Skyrim. The problem occurs after about 5-10 mins of playing time where the frame rate starts to drop no matter what I am doing. The game is still playable but this is irritating given that I was able to play it without problems in the past.

I've tried setting it to Medium, turning off Anti Aliasing and Vertical Sync off but the problem still persists. I tried it on Low also but the problem still occurs but it is less severe.

Anyone have similar problems? Or better yet, a solution?

That could be the problem but I doubt it since the whole laptop feels no warmer than usual and everything else outside of the game is functioning OK?

That isn't a very good indicator. You should setup MSI afterburner to watch temps on the GPU, and find something for watching CPU temps.

It is a laptop, they have horrible airflow and lots of temp issues. They are designed around throttling as temps go up.

Installed MSI afterburner and it looks as though you are right! The temperature soars after 5-10 mins of playing time to around 80-90 degrees. Is this bad for the GPU? I blew into the air intakes and then had a go at them with a vacuum cleaner and I managed to remove some dust and dirt that could be making things worse.

Are there any other ways to reduce temperature without having to open up my laptop and give it a clean?

Those temps aren't damage inducing, but it is the cause of throttling.

Other than cleaning out the heat sinks inside the laptop, you do want to make sure to always use it on a table, or similar flat hard surface.

Cheers, I'll just give it a clean and try keep it on hard surfaces etc.
