how?
I have a newly redeployed lan server running XP Pro. works fine for all my diverse devices.
I would prefer that it power down to some degree when not serving actively.

can I set this to go 'standby' [not hibernate] and then wake it somehow via a simple LAN request?

yes, if the NIC it supports wake on lan, grab any wake on lan client, call it with your mac address and the PC should wake up, only works if you have another PC on your network that's up and that can send the command, it might be possible from some routers but I'm not totally sure.
