Completely new build: (sorry for the long explanation)

I have an i7-4820K (Ivy Bridge) and GA-X79 UP4 mobo. I learned that the mobo has to be flashed the F4 bios and you must have a Sandy Bridge CPU to flash it. The CPU is approved for this mobo.

I have temporary use of an i7-3820 Sandy Bridge CPU. After updating the bios using both Q Flash and @BIOS 3.3, I still cannot get the i7-4820K to boot. Fans, PSU, LEDs start but cut off. This cycle repeats itself until I turn off the PSU. Updated Bios ID now reads 8A10AG03 version F4.

I went so far as to install a fresh Windows 7 64 Bit OS on a new 240GB SSD. I've installed all of the Intel drivers listed on Gigabyte's site as well as the various utilities. The system is completely functional with the i7-3820 including LAN and Internet support. As soon as I put the i7-4820K back in....NADA. This is a completely new build and everything works with the i7-3820 installed so hardware failure doesn't appear to be the issue (unless the i7-4820K CPU is bad). I'm also not sure how updated drivers help when the i7-4820K doesn't reach actual boot status.

I have touched very little in terms of BIOS changes other than boot order and fans. As a last step, I removed the CMOS battery this morning for about 5 minutes and reinstalled the i7-4820k thinking a setting was causing the issue. I've done all of my testing with an older video Quaddro FX1700 lately (which shouldn't matter).

I'm at my wits end. Gigabyte tech support was pretty good about keeping up with our email chain until this week. I ordered a second mobo last week thinking this one was bad before tech support enlightened me about the F4 update process. This is unopened and will be returned. I'm not sure what else to do other than buy another mobo but I'm concerned this will happen again and I really want this system up and running this week!!!!

I have that same board with a 3930k. The F4 bios is very untested. It shut off my ability to use my screen saver or power saving to shut off the screen. it would stay powered up and fully active 24/7. What a pain in the behind. I finally got a utility (@bios version 2.32) from Gigabyte support to backdate to the F2 bios I had previously to get it working again. After that, I found out there is a F3u bios from a 3rd party that updates the firmware on the Marvell SATA chips for better raid 1 performance and updates the bios to recognize the IB-E chips. It works great on my system.

I don't know if my dropbox public links still work, but here:

Buy an ASUS RAMPAGE IV EXTREME motherboard, and if you have any problems, it's definitely something with the CPU..

Excellent idea! I decided to try the F5c on TweakTown and was thrilled as could be to finally hear my CPU boot up!!!
