Hello, when I came in to work and booted up my computer it appears that all my desktop files and all files in My Documents are missing. This is a big problem because I have my work files, inventory, and sales records from two years ago now gone. I have no idea what has happened. I tried to do a system restore and it said it was unable to do it and no changes were made. I have system restore points for every day for months back but they are not working. I read somewhere that system restore does not restore files anyway, so I don't think that will help me.

I have clicked on view hidden files, and searched for the files including hidden files and nothing has turned up. What just happened? Has anyone had this problem? Any suggestions on solutions? Thank you so much in advance.

I starting to wonder if this month's microsoft updates didn't effect some computers. I had two computers at work loose their desktop and documents shortly after the updates that came out on Nov. 12. System restore also failed even though there were multiple restore points to choose from. If you can get your event viewer to run, check to see what date updates were last installed.

I don't have a fix for you, but we have backups of our systems so I was able to get them up and running fairly quick.

When your files vanished youshouldn't use that Hard Drive any longer, because in these situations you must avoid any changes on the HD, otherwise the possibility to recovery files will be minimal.
I suggest Hiren's Boot CD (if you know a little about pc's), this package has tools that can save your files - life!
