It seems unnecessary, I rarely use above 6GB.

I think with the new consoles having 8 Gigs of RAM it will become a good thing to have more RAM to cache programs textures etc on PC. As for now, we are mostly below 8 and 16 is only really for future proofing, showing off and for the few that run virtual machines for development.

I have mine b/c i do occasionally boot up 2 or 3 VM and need more memory to have that not hamper my main computing functions. For general computing there is no point, much better served getting 8gb of really fast ram than 16 gb of "meh" ram. I don't think the console ports will affect ram usage as they use 8gb of Shared ram between graphics and system memory. but Eventually stuff will be able to use more than 8gb, just not for years I suspect. If I didn't run the occasional VM I woudlnt' have 16 gigs.

Let's not forget CAD, GIS, SQL, ..... Really not all that hard to exceed 16GB, and don't forget Apps just keep growing as do games--Today most recommend 8GB for gaming - it was only about a year or so ago everyone was saying 4GB is plenty - but hit the stores - most all the pre-built rigs these days have a min of 6-8 and can find quite a few w/ 16GB
